Security measures when facing the threat of a flood

When there is a threat of a flood, follow the following recommendations:

Before:

  • Do not construct buildings in common flood zones:  river shores and gorges, plains or flood valleys.

  • Plant trees in the mouths or channels of gorges and rivers as the vegetation provides firmness to the soil, prevents erosion, absorbs water and diminishes the water’s speed and strength.

  • Construct solid drains and clean them periodically to avoid blockage.

  • Do not install electrical equipment or materials in the ground floor of your house, as the water can damage them in the case of a flood.

  • Keep a reserve of potable water and food, particularly during the period of intense rains.

  • Have a battery operated radio and lantern on hand with extra batteries as well as a first aid kit.

  • Establish your fastest exit routes from your house or place of work towards high areas that have been established as refuges.

During:

  • Remain calm and calm your family members.  A distressed person can make mistakes.

  • Be up to date on the advisories from authorities by radio.

  • Keep your family in a safe area, avoid crossing rivers or flooded areas on foot, on animal or in vehicles without the help of trained personnel.

  • Shut off water and gas valves.

  • Remain in the highest place possible and wait to be rescued.

After:

  • Remain calm.

  • Follow instructions given by radio or other media forms.

  • Ensure that your food supply is clean, do not eat anything raw or of doubtful origin.

  • Drink potable water that was stored or boil water you are going to drink.

  • Check your house carefully to ensure that there is no danger.

  • Keep gas, lights and water disconnected until you are sure that there are no leaks or danger of short circuits.

  • Ensure that your electrical appliances are dry before connecting them.

  • Use the telephone only for emergencies.

  • If your home is in an affected area, do not return to it until the authorities indicate that it is safe to do so.

  • Remove stagnant water to avoid mosquito infestations.
