When there is a threat of a flood, follow the following recommendations:
Before:
-
Do not construct buildings in common flood zones: river shores and gorges, plains or flood valleys.

Plant trees in the mouths or channels of gorges and rivers as the vegetation provides firmness to the soil, prevents erosion, absorbs water and diminishes the water’s speed and strength.

Construct solid drains and clean them periodically to avoid blockage.
-
Do not install electrical equipment or materials in the ground floor of your house, as the water can damage them in the case of a flood.
-
Keep a reserve of potable water and food, particularly during the period of intense rains.
-
Have a battery operated radio and lantern on hand with extra batteries as well as a first aid kit.
-
Establish your fastest exit routes from your house or place of work towards high areas that have been established as refuges.
During:
-
Remain calm and calm your family members. A distressed person can make mistakes.
-
Be up to date on the advisories from authorities by radio.
-
Keep your family in a safe area, avoid crossing rivers or flooded areas on foot, on animal or in vehicles without the help of trained personnel.
-
Shut off water and gas valves.
-
Remain in the highest place possible and wait to be rescued.
After:
-
Remain calm.
-
Follow instructions given by radio or other media forms.
-
Ensure that your food supply is clean, do not eat anything raw or of doubtful origin.
-
Drink potable water that was stored or boil water you are going to drink.
-
Check your house carefully to ensure that there is no danger.
-
Keep gas, lights and water disconnected until you are sure that there are no leaks or danger of short circuits.
-
Ensure that your electrical appliances are dry before connecting them.
-
Use the telephone only for emergencies.
-
If your home is in an affected area, do not return to it until the authorities indicate that it is safe to do so.
-
Remove stagnant water to avoid mosquito infestations.
